NCDOT to Replace Sawyer Road Bridge in Orange County

RALEIGH - Weather permitting, work will begin next week on an N.C. Department of Transportation project to replace the bridge on Sawyer Road in Orange County. On Monday, April 14, crews will close Sawyer Road near Gray Road. The road will remain closed to through traffic during construction of the new bridge, which is expected to be complete by Friday, Aug. 15. During the closure, motorists will use Gray Road, Hall Dairy Road, Holly Ridge Road and N.C. 57 as the signed detour route. NCDOT encourages motorists to pay attention, obey the posted speed limit, and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely. This project is part of the department's overall bridge program to improve the condition of the state's bridges. Built in 1964, the existing bridge is reaching the end of its life cycle and needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands. The new bridge will accommodate all traffic, including trucks and emergency vehicles, as it will not be subject to the load restrictions of the current bridge.
