SHELBY-As rehabilitation of the Dodson Mill Road bridge over U.S. 52 in Surry County continues, theN.C. Department of Transportationwill temporarily close portions of U.S. 52nextweek to remove the bridge girders.
Beginning Monday, Oct. 6 at 9 p.m., U.S. 52 Southbound will be closed at Exit 136. The road will re-open Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 6 a.m.
A detour will be in place directing southboundmotorists to Cook School Road, then Old U.S. 52, then from West Dodson Mill Road to Whitaker Chapel Road, then from N.C. 268 back to U.S. 52.
On Tuesday at 9 p.m., U.S. 52 Northbound at Exit 134 will close for girder removal. The road will reopen Wednesday, Oct. 8, at6 a.m.The detour for the northbound closure will direct motorists to take N.C.268 to the U.S.52 Bypass, and then back to U.S.52
The rehabilitation is necessary because the bottom of the bridge has been struck several times by trucks passing under the bridge. The rehabilitation will add 18 inches of clearance for traffic on U.S. 52 and should prevent those issues from recurring.
The project started in April and should be finished in May 2015.
R.E. Burns and Sons Company, Inc. of Statesville was awarded the $1,193,556 contract for the project in September 2013.
