CHARLOTTE - The
N.C. Department of Transportation will intermittently close lanes in both directions on Independence Boulevard near Conference Drive from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 15 and 16, weather permitting. The closures are part of the $51 million widening project to convert Independence Boulevard to an expressway between Sharon Amity Road and Wallace Lane.
Crews will continue work on the future Conference Drive overpass, requiring intermittent lane closures for westbound traffic on Wednesday night. Closures will move to the eastbound lanes Thursday night. No offsite detours will be necessary.
In addition, NCDOT this weekend will close a section of Sharon Amity Road between Monroe Road and Albemarle Road to tie in new waterlines on the project. The closure will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17 until 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20. Motorists traveling on Sharon Amity Road are advised to use the following detours:
Sharon Amity Road southbound: Albemarle Road to Independence Boulevard to Wendover Road to Monroe Road back to Sharon Amity Road.
Sharon Amity Road northbound: Monroe Road to Wendover Road to Independence Boulevard to Albemarle Road back to Sharon Amity Road.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
