"Superstreet" design is part of $125.2 million I-85 widening project
CHARLOTTE -The N.C. Department of Transportation has placed traffic into a new pattern on Poplar Tent Road near I-85 in Concord as construction winds down on the $125.2 million I-85 widening project. The "superstreet" design stretches from west of Derita Road/Odell School Road to east of Shelton Road. A similar pattern will be implemented on N.C. 73 from Biscayne Drive to Branson Road.
The "superstreet" is beneficial in mitigating congestion on urban roadways by redirecting side-street traffic from going straight or making left turns at divided highway intersections. Motorists approaching from side streets can turn right and continue to the first available U-turn, reducing the potential for accidents while maintaining traffic flow.
Engineers have already restricted left turn movements on Poplar Tent Road to help with sight distance. The contractor must pour concrete islands and install remaining traffic signals before opening remaining travel lanes.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
