RALEIGH -On Tuesday, Oct. 7, 19 appointed officials will convene for the first time to establish the North Carolina Aviation Development Task Force at N.C. Department of Transportation headquarters in Raleigh. The task force was created by two executive orders issued by Governor Pat McCrory this summer, and is charged with submitting a comprehensive report on the state's aviation programs to the Secretary of Transportation by September 1, 2015.
Executive Order No. 54 outlined the task force and was issued by Governor McCrory on May 19. The initial order was then amended through Executive Order No. 63, which increased the maximum number of task force members from 13 to 21, and revised the deadline for a final assessment from May 2015 to September of that year.
The task force will be chaired by John D. Lennon, a member of the North Carolina Board of Transportation. For Tuesday's inaugural session, there will be 19 members present, and by the end of the meeting members will have formed four focus area groups to achieve the goals laid out in Executive Order No. 54. These focus areas are Division of Aviation process, funding, economic development, and military retention.
