contractors say the opening of the interchange of Macy Grove Road and I-40 Business/U.S.421
in Kernersville has been delayed. It was expected to be open by early December, with the revised date being in mid to late January. The reason for the delay is because traffic signs needed for the interchange project are not ready to be installed. The interchange is part of a $38.8 million Macy Grove Road Improvement Project. In addition to the interchange, the project involves the widening of Macy Grove Road from near Industrial Park Drive to Old Greensboro Road, building a new extension of the roadway from Old Greensboro Road to north of Old U.S. 421/East Mountain Street, and constructing bridge crossings over the Norfolk Southern Railroad and Old U.S. 421/East Mountain Street. There will also be an extension of Macy Grove Road on new location from north of Old U.S. 421/East Mountain Street to N.C. 150 (North Main Street). Once complete, drivers will have a direct link between U.S. 421/I-40 Business and N.C. 150 (North Main Street) north of Kernersville, which is expected to reduce congestion in downtown Kernersville and at the N.C. 66/N.C. 150 interchange with U.S. 421/I-40 Business. For real-time travel information at any time, call 511, visit www.ncdot.gov/travel or follow NCDOT on Twitter.
