Portion of I-40 in Burke County Closed After Fatal Crash

SHELBY-- The left lane of I-40 westboundis closed at Exit 105 near Morgantonwhile law enforcement investigates a fatal crash that killed a construction worker and injured two others.

The crew, who wasemployed by two contracting companies,was working on paving operations in the left lane of I-40 westboundat Exit 105 about 2:30 a.m. The workers were wearing reflective safety vests and wereinside a work zone surrounded by construction barrels.The construction site was illuminatedwith portable lighting.

A vehicle veered into the work zone and hit three of the workers. One worker was killed and another was seriously injured. A third worker was treated and released from the hospital.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and coworkers of these men," said NCDOT Secretary Tony Tata. "It's imperative that, as motorists, we stay alert and use extreme caution when driving through work zones for our ownsafety andto protect the men and women who are working to improve our highways."

N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
