Rains Crossroads Road Bridge in Johnston County to Close Next Week for Replacement - Bridge to open to traffic in June

RALEIGH - Starting Monday, Feb. 3, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close a section of Rains Crossroads Road east of Pine Level in Johnston County so crews can replace the bridge over Little Creek. The bridge is scheduled to reopen June 2, 2014, weather permitting.A $595,363 contract was awarded to Palmetto Infrastructure Inc. of Greenville, S.C. for the project. The bridge, which was constructed in 1952, is classified as structurally deficient. This means it has remained safe for use, but is in deteriorating condition and needs to be replaced. Because of the condition of the bridge, NCDOT posted a weight limit restricting single-axle vehicles weighing more than 16 tons and trucks weighing more than 24 tons from using the bridge. The new bridge will meet current design standards and will not have posted weight limits. Rains Crossroads Road will be closed to traffic with a signed detour in place. Through traffic will use Parrish Memorial Road, Batten Farm Road and Fulghum Little Creek Road to travel around the construction site. Local traffic will be able to use Rains Crossroads Road, but will not be able to cross the bridge. Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
