MANNS HARBOR - The North Carolina Department of Transportation's Ferry Division took part in security exercise drills on Sunday, July 20, involving the ferry terminals and vessels on the Hatteras-Ocracoke route.
This exercise DID NOT take place in response to any threat to ferry vessels, terminals or any other transportation venue or facility, but rather as an exercise to assist in evaluating and enhancing security measures for the North Carolina Ferry System. Similar drills have been held within the Ferry Division over the last several years.
The ferry division and its staff worked on the exercise with the Transportation Security Administration's Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response (VIPR) team, law enforcement and emergency services personnel from Dare and Hyde counties, and the United States Coast Guard Sector North Carolina. This was an exercise in which local and federal agencies work together to supplement existing security resources.
