Raleigh - One of the two northbound lanes on the Haywood Road bridge over I-240 in Asheville is expected to remain closed until early January as a result of damage to a beam under the bridge.
On Friday afternoon, Dec. 11, a tractor trailer hauling an excavator was traveling east on I-240 and when it went under the Haywood Road bridge, the boom of the excavator was too high and struck one of the steel beams under the bridge.
NCDOT engineers closed the one lane to lighten the traffic weight load on the damaged beam. The bridge itself remains safe for use.
The lane closure will remain in place until a contractor can repair the damage. Drivers on Haywood Road need to pay extra attention in the area of the closure.
