Raleigh - Despite the closure of U.S. 15/501 (Hawkins Avenue) in Sanford, Northview Crossing and other businesses near the project are open for business. The public can still access these establishments using a signed detour along the route.
The N.C. Department of Transportation closed U.S. 15/501 (Hawkins Avenue) in Sanford on April 27. This closure is for the construction of two roundabouts at the U.S. 1 interchange (Exit 71) and will last 60 days, ending June 25. Charleston Drive will also remain closed for a 60-day duration, with a completion date for this project tentatively set for July 10.
Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
A roundabout is a circular intersection that channels traffic around a center island without using traffic signals. Because roundabouts allow for continuous flow, they let vehicles pass through the intersection more efficiently than traditional intersections. This not only reduces congestion, but also cuts down on pollution and fuel use. In addition, roundabouts are proven to reduce accidents at unsignalized intersections.
