Kitty Hawk - N.C. 12/Beach Road is currently closed between Lillian Street and White Ave. Kitty Hawk Road is also closed at N.C. 12/Beach Road. The road was closed Sunday, Oct. 4, due to deep water on the road after high tidal waves washed out a portion of a sand dune near Milepost Four. The road was then damaged due to the waves on Monday, Oct. 5.
Sandbags that were part of a dune recently constructed at this location earlier this summer provided protection to the road south of the current damaged area. The worst damage is along an area where the dune was constructed only out of sand. The section protected by sandbags did see damage but not to the extent of the section with no sandbags
NCDOT is currently working on a contract for the repair of this road, as well as the reconstruction of the dune in this location. A timeframe is not currently in place for reopening the road; however, it is anticipated to take several weeks. Drivers are reminded to use U.S. 158 as an alternate route around the closure.
Once construction begins, crews will rebuild the road, and will also reconstruct the dune to include sandbags. The new sandbags will connect with those on the southern end of the closure, and will continue north to connect with another dune that includes sandbags north of this location, making for a constant line of sandbags along N.C. 12/Beach Road in this location.
N.C. 12 on Ocracoke Island and Cedar Island is now open. NCDOT crews have installed protective measures along the dune line to protect N.C. 12 on Ocracoke Island, and will work on a plan for reconstructing the dune. As crews continue to work in this area, please use caution and pay attention while traveling near equipment.
