Charlotte - The bridge on Concord Avenue over U.S. 74 in Monroe is closed today after a hit-and-run crash damaged part of the bridge.
Crews were on site yesterday inspecting the bridge after reports of damage, and further analysis of the inspection report revealed the bridge needed to close because of girder damage. A girder is a large beam that helps support vertical loads on the bridge.
The bridge was likely struck by heavy equipment from a vehicle traveling eastbound on U.S. 74, below the bridge. It appears the vehicle didn't stop at the scene.
At this time, crews are still determining how long the bridge will be closed in order to make the necessary repairs. NCDOT officials are on site at this time establishing a detour route.
