Charlotte - Beginning next week, the N.C. Department of Transportation will be ramping up construction efforts on the Interstate 85widening project, I-3802A, in Cabarrus County. Motorists are asked to be on the lookout for workers and construction vehicles in this active work zone.
Crews began initial work on the project in May, but motorists traveling through the project area from Exit 55 to Exit 63shouldexpect heavy construction to begin in the I-85 median from Exit 55 to Exit 58 and at the U.S. 29/601 and I-85 interchange. Although all travel lanes will be maintained during project construction, motorists can expect construction/hauling traffic to occur periodically.
The speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph throughout the project limits.
The widening project will add four additional travel lanes (two in each direction) to approximately eight miles of I-85 from Exit 55 to Exit 63.The project also includes interchange improvements at U.S. 29/601 (Exit 58), Dale Earnhardt Boulevard (Exit 60) and Lane Street (Exit 63).
