TheN.C. Department of Transportation
has completed the replacement of a 41-year-old
bridge over the Big Cypress Swamp on Ramsey Ford Road in Columbus County near Nakina. Crews are finalizing inspections and expect the route to open by Friday, May 29.
The replaced bridge was considered structurally deficient, which meant it was still safe, but was in deteriorating condition. Because of that, it also had weight restrictions that limited the types of vehicles that could use it.
This project was one of 12 bridges in a $7.8 million contract with Smith-Rowe LLC that is part of the State Funded Bridge Replacement program. It was awarded to the lowest bidder as required by state law.
