HARRISBURG-The N.C. Department of Transportation reminds residents that it will temporarily close Robinson Church Road at the railroad crossing at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14. The road is scheduled to reopen the evening of Monday, Feb. 16. The closure is necessary to accelerate the completion of the new four-lane Roberta Road Bridge, which cannot be finished until the existing track and train traffic is shifted through the crossing to the new alignment under the bridge.
Motorists north of the railroad crossing can use the following detour starting from the intersection of N.C. 49 and Robinson Church Road:
Proceed south on N.C. 49
Turn right onto the I-485 South ramp toward Pineville
Take Exit 36 to Rocky River Road
Turn left onto Rocky River Road
Turn left onto Robinson Church Road
Motorists south of the railroad crossing can use the following detour starting from the intersection of Robinson Church Road and Stallings Road:
Proceed south on Robinson Church Road
Turn right onto Rocky River Road
Turn right onto the I-485 North ramp toward Concord
Take Exit 33 to N.C. 49
Turn left onto N.C. 49 North

An alternate route to consider east of Robinson Church Road includes Old Charlotte Road, Rocky River Road, and Stallings Road. West of Robinson Church Road, an alternate route includes Millbrook Road, Caldwell Park Road, Caldwell Road, and Tom Query Road.
NCDOT and Norfolk Southern Railway have coordinated their efforts to ensure that this will be the only closure for Robinson Church Road until the completion of the new Roberta Road Bridge and the permanent closure of the Robinson Church Road railroad crossing. NCDOT scheduled the work for the Washington's Birthday holiday to minimize the impact of the closure.
Harrisburg and Cabarrus County fire, police, and EMS personnel are working closely with NCDOT to maintain emergency response times and ensure the highest levels of service throughout the duration of construction. Consultations occur more frequently during critical closures.
During the Robinson Church Road closure, the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office will maintain incident response times by stationing multiple patrol cars on the north and south sides of the construction area. The Harrisburg Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with three fire departments outside town limits to increase coverage and maintain response times. Residents experiencing life-threatening emergencies should always call 911 for immediate assistance.
During the closure, crews will perform the following work:
Removal of asphalt within the crossing limits
Grading trackbed for the second track in the crossing area
Installing the new second track through the crossing
Shifting several hundred feet of existing track through the crossing
Paving the crossing
This closure is a critical part of NCDOT's Piedmont Improvement Program, a series of railroad and highway enhancements aimed to improve safety, spur job growth and improve connectivity between Raleigh and Charlotte, as well the communities in between.
