Wilmington -In preparation of the Kerr Avenue widening project in Wilmington scheduled to begin this spring, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close northbound Market Street between Cinema Drive and Kerr Avenue nightly from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. starting the night of Sunday, March 1 and ending the morning of Friday, March 6, weather permitting. This work was originally scheduled to begin February 22, but had to be postponed due to inclement weather.
These nightly closures will allow NCDOT crews to remove trees on Market Street in the area of the intersection with Kerr Avenue where the road will be widened. Traffic will be detoured through Cinema Drive. At least one lane of traffic is expected to remain open nightly in the southbound direction. All lanes will be open throughout the day.
NCDOT's Division Three will be donating the small branches and limbs from the trees to The Woodlot program through the Salvation Army, which delivers wood to needy families that use it for heating and cooking. Much of the larger sections of wood will be donated to the local organization, "Kids Making It" and to the New Hanover County School System for use in their carpentry program.
The project to widen Kerr Avenue in the vicinity of Market Street is scheduled for letting in April 2015, and is intended to increase mobility and safety while reducing travel times along this heavily-traveled corridor.
Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
