MONROE-On February 2, the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin a project at two East Windsor Street intersections to improve safety for motorists in Monroe.
In the first phase, the intersection of McCauley Street, East Windsor Street and East Franklin Street will be modified to allow left turns from westbound East Windsor Street onto eastbound East Franklin Street. In the second phase, NCDOT will install a directional crossover at the intersection of East Windsor Street and Morgan Mill Road. After this installation, motorists will be allowed only to turn right from East Windsor Street onto Morgan Mill Road.
The work should take four to six weeks to complete.
Once the improvements are completed, motorists who previously turned left from East Windsor Street to travel north on Morgan Mill Road toward US 74 will instead turn left onto East Franklin Street and then left onto Morgan Mill Road. Motorists who previously turned left from East Windsor Street to travel south on Morgan Mill Road toward East Franklin Street will instead turn onto Lee Street and then onto East Franklin Street to get to their destinations.
These improvements are part of NCDOT's ongoing efforts to improve safety for North Carolina's motorists. From 2003 to 2013, there were 32 angle crashes reported at the intersection of East Windsor Street and Morgan Mill Road. The new directional crossover is intended to correct this crash pattern.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert, and obey the posted speed limit.
