NCDOT to Replace Bridge on Colt Thornburg Road in Gaston County

CHARLOTTE-- TheN.C. Department of Transportationwill close a portion of Colt Thornburg Road in Gaston County beginning Monday, April 13,while crewsreplace a bridge with a culvert.

The bridge over Coley Creek was built in 1961 and is considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. That means that although the bridge is safe, it was built to outdated designed standards and isn't equipped to meet current and future traffic demands.

A signed detour will direct motorists to Cloninger Road, then to Ratchford Road, and thenfrom Philadelphia Church Road back to Colt Thornburg Road.

The road is expected to reopen to traffic in August.

This is the second of five bridge replacement projects in a$1.7 million contract. The contract includes replacing bridges with culverts in Alexander, Cleveland, Catawba, Gaston and Iredell counties.

All five bridges will be replaced by late 2016.
