SHELBY- On Monday, Jan. 12, theN.C. Department of Transportationwill begin building a new bridge on Old Hendersonville Road over Lyday Creek, between Brevard and Etowah.
During the bridge replacement project, a portion of the road will be closed with a detour in place for motorists. The signed detour will direct motorists to follow Old Hendersonville Road to Crab CreekRoad, and then take U.S. 64 to Enon Road beforereturning to Old Hendersonville Road.
The bridge was built in 1920 and is considered functionally obsolete. That means the bridge, although safe for travel, was built to design standards no longer in use and needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands.
The road will be closed through mid-May.
R.E. Burns and Sons Co., Inc. of Statesville is the contractor for the $415,291 project.
