New Bridge Opens on Auburn-Knightdale Road More Than 6 Weeks Ahead of Schedule

RALEIGH - There is good news for the more than 3,000 motorists a day who had to detour off Auburn-Knightdale Road in southeast Wake County since September 2014 because of a bridge replacement project. The brand new bridge over the Neuse River was expected to open just before Thanksgiving weekend, but instead opened midday today, more than six weeks ahead of schedule. The replacement of the 370-foot bridge that had spanned the river for more than 50 years was needed because it was requiring more constant repairs, and it was built to design standards no longer used. This is the fifth bridge completed under an $8.1 million contract for seven new bridges in Wake County awarded to S.T. Wooten of Wilson in May 2012. Still to come are bridges on Wagstaff Road and Trailwood Drive.
