ASHEVILLE -Work is scheduled to start Monday, Aug. 17, on a new bridge on Greasy Creek Road south of Marion in McDowell County.
N.C. Department of Transportation crews will detour drivers around the construction, directing traffic to Montford Cove and Ham Creek roads to return to Greasy Creek Road on the other side of Harris Creek.
The project is expected to be finished in mid-December and is part of NCDOT's overall bridge program to improve the condition of the state's bridges.
NCDOT awarded R.E. Burns and Sons, Inc., of Statesville a $7.4 million contract to build a dozen bridges in McDowell, Burke, and Rutherford counties, including the new crossing on Greasy Creek Road. All 12 are scheduled to be finished by mid-October 2017.
