RALEIGH Two new roundabouts at the U.S. 1 interchange (Exit 71) in Sanford near the Northview Crossing Shopping Center will open for traffic this Friday.
After a series of frontal impact crashes at the intersection of U.S. 15/501 (Hawkins Avenue) at the northbound and southbound ramps and the intersection of U.S. 15/501 and Amos Bridges Road, it was noted these improvements were needed address the safety of the road for motorists.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation
had closed U.S. 15/501 for the construction. Charleston Drive was also closed for a 60-day duration for the work. Crews will continue paving the route through Thursday, July 2, paint stripes on the road Friday, July 3 and once striping is complete, the road will open to traffic.
In the event of bad weather, which could delay the paving and striping operation, the road would open Monday, July 6.
These new roundabouts are circular intersections that channel traffic around a center island without using traffic signals. Because roundabouts allow for continuous flow, they let vehicles pass through the intersection more efficiently than traditional intersections. This will not only reduces congestion, but also cuts down on pollution and fuel use. In addition, roundabouts are proven to reduce accidents at unsignalized intersections.
