Nightly Closures Scheduled on Independence Boulevard for Girder Placement

Off-site detour will be in place during work on bridge at Sharon Amity Road

CHARLOTTE A portion of eastbound U.S. 74/Independence Boulevardwill close temporarily each nightbeginning Sunday, Nov. 1, at 10 p.m.as crews install girders for the new bridge at Sharon Amity Road.

A girder is a large beam that helps support a bridge's vertical load. The new bridge at Sharon Amity Road is part of the creation of an interchange at U.S. 74, which is currently being converted into an expressway in this area.

The eastbound closure will be in place from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly through Thursday, Nov. 5. There will be no closure on the night of Monday, Nov. 2, because of the Carolina Panthers game.During the eastbound U.S. 74 closure,motorists will be directed to use the following detour:

Traffic will turn right (south) onto Sharon Amity Road then left (east)onto Monroe Road. Traffic will then turn left (north) onto Conference Drive. Motorists should follow Conference Drive over U.S. 74, then straight across Idlewild Roadand back to U.S. 74.

There will be no nightly closures on Friday, Nov. 6,and Saturday, Nov. 7. The eastbound closures will resume the night of Sunday, Nov. 8 and continue each nightthrough Tuesday, Nov. 10.

During these detour time periods there will be simultaneous lane closures for the inbound/westbound lanes of U.S. 74.

Once all girders are set over eastbound U.S. 74, the contractor will immediately begin setting girders over the westbound/inbound lanes of U.S. 74. This work is tentatively scheduled fromTuesday,Nov.10, through Thursday, Nov. 12.There will be no nightlyclosures on Friday, Nov. 13, orSaturday, Nov. 14.

Then, the nightly closures will resume thenight of Sunday,Nov.15, through Wednesday, Nov.18,or until competed.

During the nightly closures,westbound U.S. 74 motorists will use the following detour:

Westbound/inbound U.S. 74 traffic will turn right (north) onto W.T. Harris Boulevardand travel to Albemarle Road.Motorists should take a left onto westbound Albemarle Road (N.C. 24/27) and travel back to U.S. 74 westbound.

Motorists are encouraged to slow down and be mindful of crews working along the road. All work is dependent on good weather conditions.
