ASHEVILLE -The N.C. Department of Transportation will begin work Monday, Aug. 10, on safety improvements in Old Fort, including the permanent closure of the Lackey Town Road railroad crossing.
A permanent turn-around will be installed on the U.S. 70 side of the railroad, and drivers will be detoured to the crossing on Mauney Avenue, less than a half-mile away.
The project also includes widening, straightening and resurfacing Railroad Street, as well as building a new railroad crossing on Spring Street.
