Public Meeting Scheduled for Proposed Improvements for Aviation Parkway Exit on I-40

RALEIGH -The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting on Aug. 4 regarding proposed changes to the Aviation Parkway exit on I-40 in Morrisville. The Department is proposing to add a loop-style exit ramp from I-40 West onto Aviation Parkway in the northwest corner of the interchange. The current diamond-style interchange currently in place was part of the original I-40 construction in that area in 1969, and since then, the interstate has been widened and the growth of RDU Airport and other commercial developments have resulted in traffic demand that exceeds roadway capacity. This has caused congestion and delay for existing traffic using the exit ramps, which will continue to worsen with projected future traffic. The current setup requires drivers going north or south on Aviation Parkway to use the same exit ramp off I-40. Southbound drivers have to turn left at the top of the ramp, while northbound drivers heading towards RDU Airport have a free-flow lane onto Aviation. The meeting on Aug. 4 will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Morrisville Town Hall, 100 Town Hall Drive in Morrisville. NCDOT representatives will be available during the open-house style setting to provide information, answer questions and collect comments regarding the proposed project. Citizens are welcome to attend at any time during the meeting hours, as there will not be a formal presentation. Anyone desiring additional information may contact Mr. Gene Tarascio of NCDOT at 919-707-6046 or gtarscio@ncdot.gov. Comments may be submitted until Aug. 20.
