Russell Street Improvements Start in Fayetteville

Detours in place; businesses still open

RALEIGH-The N.C. Department of Transportation began a project this week toimprove storm drainage on Russell Street from Gillespie Street to Cross Creek Street in Fayetteville. The work has closed eastbound Russell Street between Gillespie Street and Cool Springs Street, and a detour is in place until November 15.

The detour route uses Gillespie Street to N.C. 87 to Eastern Boulevard to Russell Street.

This proposed project is replacing approximately 900 feet of storm drainage pipe and improving future storm drainage along the route. After the roadway settled in numerous locations along the route, crews investigated the area. They found the existing storm drain on Russell Street was failing, and the terracotta pipe material was distorted with extensive cracking.

Additionally, NCDOT is working nearby on bridge rehabilitation to the bridge on Russell Street over Blounts Creek between Cool Springs Street and Old Wilmington Road. This project will require a rotating lane closures on Russell Street until October 15.

Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
