RALEIGH Beginning at 11 p.m. Monday, October 12, theN.C. Department of Transportationwill close the northbound off ramp at Exit 22 on Interstate 95 in Lumberton.
The closure is associated with ongoing work for thediverging diamond interchange at that locationthat will increase safety for drivers and reduce congestion. The work is to install an overhead sign structure over the ramp. The exit should reopen only a couple of hours after the work begins. Message boards will be placed in the area to alert motorists.
The diverging diamond interchange project began in September 2012 and the interchange's new traffic pattern started on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The entire project is anticipated for completion in early 2016. It will allow two directions of traffic to temporarily cross to the left side of the road, while moving high volumes of traffic through an intersection without increasing the number of lanes and traffic signals. This movement provides easier access to an interstate. Traffic entering or exiting an interstate does not have to cross opposing traffic to make a left turn.
Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
