Southern Pines Road Sees Safety Improvements

RALEIGH -The N.C. Department of Transportation will begin operating a new fully signalized intersection at the connection of Morganton Road and Fire Lane in Southern Pines on Friday, Sept. 11. Not only will motorists notice new stoplights, but pedestrians will also be greeted with lighting and new pedestrian signals.Earlier this summer, NCDOT crews worked with local town officials to improve crosswalks and lighting at the intersection to increase safety for both pedestrians and drivers. Utility work and signal installation began in August and finished earlier this month. The signalized intersection work was completed just in time for the start of the fall soccer season for families visiting the nearby sports complex."This project hasn't been a want, it's been a need for both the area and for the AC Sandhills Soccer group," said Patrick Molamphy, NCDOT Board Member for Division Eight. "I'm happy to say that motorists and pedestrians can now travel more safely down Morganton Road. Our NCDOT staff worked diligently on this matter to make sure of that."
