CHARLOTTE-- As construction progresses on the Independence Boulevard/U.S. 74 widening project, crews will begin nightly lane closures to work on the new Idlewild Road bridge.

Contractor Devere Construction will close inbound/westbound Independence Boulevard between W.T. Harris Boulevard and Idlewild Road from Monday, March 16, through Saturday, March 21. The closure will be in place nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Also during those days, the two inside lanes in the outbound/eastbound direction will be closed nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. The closures will allow crews to set girders for the Idlewild Road bridge.

During the closure of the inbound lanes, motorists will be directed to take W.T. Harris Boulevard to Idlewild, and then back to Independence Boulevard.

Once crews finish setting the girders for one side of the bridge, they'll progress to the other side. The outbound/eastbound side of Independence Boulevard is scheduled to close from Monday, March 23, through Saturday, March 28. That closure will be in place nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Also during those days, the two inside inbound/westbound lanes will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The outbound/eastbound detour will direct motorists to takeSharon Amity Road to Monroe Road to Village Lake Drive, and then back to Independence Boulevard.

An estimated 70,000 vehicles travel Independence Boulevard at Idlewild Road daily, and that number will increase to as many as 91,000 vehicles a day by 2030.

Once finished, the widening project will enhance mobility and improve traffic flow along the Independence Boulevard in east Charlotte. The $51.2 million construction project is scheduled for completion in Fall 2016.
