Raleigh - The U.S. 64 drawbridge over the Alligator River between Tyrrell and Dare counties has been closed by a tractor-trailer crash. The highway is a key link to and from the Outer Banks, and could be closed until mid-afternoon.
A detour is in place, with eastbound drivers heading toward the Outer Banks instructed to turn right onto N.C. 94 east of Creswell, then left on U.S. 264 to get back to U.S. 64 near Manns Harbor. Motorists leaving the coast will follow that route in reverse, turning left on U.S. 264 west of Manns Harbor, then going right on N.C. 94 to return to U.S. 64.
On Friday, Department of Transportation crews secured the drawbridge in the down position because of the expected high winds from Tropical Storm Hermine. It will not be raised to allow boat traffic to pass through until the windy conditions from the storm subside.
