The project is part of the Piedmont Improvement Program, a $520 million investment in rail and highway improvements between Raleigh and Charlotte.
This project is one of three that will add a total of approximately 26 miles of new second track along the main line, providing an uninterrupted double track spanning 92 miles between Greensboro and Charlotte.
Work included construction of four miles of second track along the North Carolina Railroad Company main line corridor in Davidson County allowing trains to pass more frequently, reducing congestion, increasing capacity and reliability, and decreasing travel time between Raleigh and Charlotte.
The project opens to traffic on Monday, Oct. 31.
