Raleigh - Bridge repair work this weekend will require the closure of the right lane of I-440 East (Inner Loop) under the bridge at Melbourne Road (Exit 1D). An over-height vehicle recently struck the bridge, damaging a concrete girder.
The bridge was inspected after the incident and is safe, but the repair is needed. For the safety of the contractor crew and motorists on the interstate, the closure is scheduled from 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, through Sunday evening on May 15, weather permitting. That exit location has only an on-ramp on the eastbound side of the interstate where the work will take place.
The Department would like to remind all motorists of North Carolina's "Move Over" law for the work zone. Drivers are urged to watch for lane closure signs, and to slow down and pay attention to other vehicles as they pass through the area.
