Wilmington - The Old Camp Road Bridge over Big Beaver Dam Creek in Magnolia will be closed beginning Jan. 2 as workers construct a new and better bridge. The new bridge will open in March 2017.
The new bridge will have updated drainage structures to prevent ponding on the roadway. Also, the bridge approaches will be reinforced to prevent washout and other maintenance issues.
The existing bridge was built in 1955 and considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. That means while it is still safe, it was built to the standards of its day and needs to be replaced.
Traffic is being detoured to Rogers Mill Road, N.C. 903 and Old Camp Road.
Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect possible delays. State officials remind motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
