Wilmington - The N.C. Department of Transportation has closed the N.C. 11 bridge over Buckskin Swamp/Grove Creek in Kenansville until Thursday, May 12. The closure will allow crews to do repairs on the bridge.
It was initially planned to only have intermittent lane closures during the work, but it was felt that it would be safer to shut the bridge down until the work is completed. Recent rain events caused deterioration in the bridge's substructure. The problem was discovered during a biannual inspection of the bridge. Regular inspections help the department identify any bridge issues. If NCDOT inspectors find a safety concern, the bridge will be repaired or if there is a safety concern, closed immediately until the repairs can be made. For more information on bridge inspections, including definitions of terms and how inspections work, please visit the North Carolina Bridge Information web page.
Local northbound traffic on N.C. 903, N.C. 50/24 and N.C. 11 should use N.C. 50 and N.C. 24. Southbound traffic should use N.C. 24, N.C. 50 and N.C. 903.
Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect possible delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
