Asheville - A road that had been a shortcut now requires a detour in southern Buncombe County.
A bridge replacement project on Lower Christ School Road over Robinson Creek began on Monday requiring a detour around the construction.
Miller Engineering began the $570,000 project on March 28 and should complete its work by the end of September 2016.
"This is to improve safety and improve the infrastructure of the bridge," assistant resident engineer Chase Carver said of the 41-year-old bridge. "This road is more of a cut-through and will add about 10 minutes to a commute through this area."
The detour utilizes Cane Creek Road and Mills Gap Road.
The NCDOT reminds drivers to obey all detour, construction, and speed-limit signs in the area to increase safety for drivers, passengers and construction workers.
