(Editor's Note: The traffic shift scheduled last night on I-85 South was postponed due to rain. The shift has been rescheduled to start at 9 p.m. tonight, Nov. 14, until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15. The correction has been made in this release).
Charlotte - As work continues on the I-85 widening project in Cabarrus County, motorists will notice new traffic patterns as crews prepare to shift lanes between Exits 55 and 58 in Concord.
These shifts will move traffic from the existing outside lanes to the new median lanes, allowing crews to safely move and reset barrier walls and place new pavement markings. Once traffic is in this new pattern, demolition of the old outside lanes will get underway.
The first traffic shift took place last week on I-85 North from north of N.C. 73 to south of U.S. 29.601.
Traffic on I-85 South will be shifted in the same area from 9 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15.
The new traffic pattern is scheduled to be in place for approximately 18 months.
The department encourages motorists to pay attention when approaching the work zone, obey the posted speed limit, and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely.
