Asheville - A culvert conversion is coming to Buncombe County.
The N.C. Department of Transportation will close a short portion of Billy Cove Road in Candler on Wednesday, Nov. 9, in order to replace a bridge over Billy Cove Creek with an improved culvert.
Bryant Land & Development Industries, Inc. of Burnsville will replace the current two-lane bridge with two 81-inch pipes in and is expected to complete construction by March 2017.
Motorists will need to take a marked one-mile detour around the construction using Brown's View Church Road and Smith Cove. The new culvert, at a cost of $316,741, will improve safety in the area and allow heavier vehicles to traverse the road.
The repair of aging bridges is a key component of Governor Pat McCrory's 25-year Vision for Transportation in North Carolina. His 2016-17 budget increased repair and replacement funding for bridges by 58 percent, totaling $242 million.
State officials remind motorists to obey detour signs, watch for construction information, remain alert and obey posted speed limits, especially through work zones.
