Greensboro - N.C. Department of Transportation contractors plan to begin replacing the Barber Road Road bridge over Big Travis Creek, closing a portion of the roadway in Elon.
"Bridge projects like this are underway across the state as part of Governor McCrory's 25-Year Transportation Vision to better connect North Carolinians to jobs, education, healthcare and recreation opportunities," said Division Seven Engineer Mike Mills.
Work will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sep. 13. The new bridge should be open by Dec. 15.
Drivers will be able to detour around the work using N.C. 87, Shallowford Church Road, Pitt Road and Elon Ossipee Road.
This project is part of the department's overall bridge program to improve the condition of the state's bridges. The 58-year-old existing bridge is functionally obsolete, and was built to design standards no longer used.
