Raleigh - Work on the I-40 Fortify rebuild project in Raleigh will require crews to close the Gorman Street ramp onto westbound Interstate 40 on Thursday night through the weekend. A similar closure took place for the eastbound exit ramp at Gorman Street in late August.
Crews will close the westbound on ramp with orange barrels about 6 p.m. on Thursday. At 9 p.m., the right lane of I-40 will be closed where the ramp merges onto the interstate, and concrete barrier walls will be put in place so crews can work safely.
The exit will re-open in time for the morning commute on Monday, Oct. 31.
There are a pair of signed detour routes drivers can use to get to the I-40 West lanes by using the Lake Wheeler Road exit. From north of the Gorman Street exit, they should turn right on Avent Ferry Road, right on Centennial Parkway and right on Lake Wheeler Road by the State Farmers' Market. Or if they are south of the Gorman Street exit, motorists should head east on Tryon Road, and turn left on Lake Wheeler Road, cross over the interstate and turn left onto the I-40 West ramp.
Drivers are reminded to obey the 60 mph speed limit, and pay extra attention when traveling through the work zone.
