I-95 North Reopens in Johnston Co; Southbound Lanes Remain Closed

Raleigh - Northbound lanes of Interstate 95 have reopened near Smithfield in Johnston County, more than 12 hours after the highway was shut down in both directions as a result of three separate crashes, one of which involved a vehicle carrying hazardous materials. The closure is from north of the I-40 interchange (Exit 81) and U.S. 70 (Exit 97).

Motorists going south on I-95 are being detoured onto U.S. 70 West (exit 97) and can take U.S. 70 Bypass to reach I-40, and go east to return to I-95 at exit 81.

Updates on I-95 can be found in the Travel section of ncdot.gov, by calling 511 or (877) 511-4662, or by following the I-95 feed for DOT's Twitter feed.
