Closure Needed for Intersection Safety Improvements
Wilmington - The intersection of Piney Green Road and Old 30 Road in Jacksonville will be closed this weekend as part of the Piney Green Road Improvement Project. The closure, scheduled for 6 a.m., Saturday, until 10 p.m., Sunday, will allow crews to safely widen and realign the intersection.
Traffic will be detoured to Cornell Drive and Victoria Road. Since this a busy construction zone, the Department of Transportation urges motorists to be especially careful and to pay attention to posted speed limits. Motorists should expect possible delays and seek alternate routes.
A wider, realigned intersection will allow for better visibility and the construction of a new turn lane to reduce congestion and improve drainage. The project includes widening the road from two lanes to four lanes with a median, as well as upgrading drainage along more than six miles of road from U.S. 17 to N.C. 24 in Onslow County.
The improvements will significantly reduce the possibility of head-on collisions and make the road accessible for larger commercial vehicles. Improved drainage reduces ponding that may occur during heavy downpours.
Road improvement projects like this are currently underway across the state as part of Governor McCrory's 25-Year Transportation Vision to enhance travel safety and to better connect North Carolinians to jobs, education, healthcare and key tourism destinations.
