Greensboro - N.C. Department of Transportation contractors plan to begin replacing the Lakeside Avenue Bridge over a tributary of Haw River next month, closing a portion of the roadway in Burlington.
Work will begin at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4. The new bridge should be open by May 2017.
Drivers will be able to detour around the work using an off-site 2-mile detour on Sharpe Road, Burch Bridge Road and Glencoe Road.
This project is part of the department's overall bridge program to improve the condition of the state's bridges. Built in 1955, the 61-year-old existing bridge was built to design standards no longer used.
