- Lane closures will be in place along Interstate 85 in Gaston County on Wednesday night, March 23, while crews pour foundations for signage near the new I-85 weigh station. The facility, located two miles south of Bessemer City from Crowders Mountain Road to Edgewood Road, is under construction and scheduled for completion in late 2016.
The right lane of both north- and southbound I-85 near the weigh station construction site will be closed late Wednesday night until early Thursday morning before the morning commute begins. Motorists traveling through the area are asked to slow down and use caution.
The new $19.7 million weigh station includes construction of the truck scale building and booth, as well as grading, drainage and paving around the new facility. Sloan Construction of Duncan, S.C., a division of Reeves Construction Company, was awarded the contract.
Once completed, the new northbound weigh station will have space for five offices, three unisex restrooms and a lobby with vending area for truck drivers. The existing weigh station on I-85 northbound about 10 miles southwest of Charlotte will close after the new facility opens.
Work on the project began in late April 2014. All work except reforestation is scheduled for November 2016.
