- As construction progresses on the I-85 widening project in Cabarrus County
, I-3802A, crews will be shifting travel lanes to temporary alignments early next week to allow for construction of the future I-85 roadway.
This shift will take place on both north- and southbound I-85 near the U.S. 29/601 interchange (Exit 58). The I-85 northbound shift will take place during the early morning of Monday, April 4,and will be in place by 6a.m. The I-85 southbound shift will take place during the early morning of Tuesday, April 5, and will be in place by 6 a.m.
Crews will maintain the existing two lane configuration for this alignment in each direction. This temporary alignment will be in place for at least one year. Motorists are encouraged to use caution in this area.
The work is part of the I-85 widening project, which includes building four additional general-purpose travel lanes (two in each direction) to approximately eight miles of I-85 from north of N.C. 73 (Exit 55) to north of Lane Street (Exit 63) in Cabarrus County. Interchange improvements are also planned for interchanges at U.S. 29/601 (Exit 58), Dale Earnhardt Boulevard (Exit 60) and Lane Street (Exit 63).
This project will complete the expansion of I-85 through the county, providing a greater level of service for local and through traffic.
