Charlotte - Rail repair work that closed a portion of N.C. 115 in Cornelius today will continue into the evening hours, keeping the road closed between north of Bailey Road and just south of Meadow Crossing Lane until about 7 p.m. Norfolk Southern is repairing a rail spur and had hoped to re-open the roadway for evening rush hour, but the extent of work needed was more than expected when the project got under way this morning. Norfolk Southern removed the old track, laid new track, and is replacing pavement between the rails and 10 feet out from each side of the track.
The detours in place through the day remain in effect. Northbound motorists take N.C. 73/Sam Furr Road to U.S. 21/Statesville Road to Catawba Avenue back to N.C. 115. Southbound drivers go in the opposite direction. Local traffic still has access to both Bailey Road and Washam Potts Road.
The Department of Transportation was planning to follow up that work during the closure by repaving a part of the road this afternoon to even it up with the Norfolk Southern right of way by the tracks. That work will instead be done Friday afternoon between 1 and 4 p.m. It will require a lane closure in the area, with flaggers handling traffic, but a complete road closure will not be needed.
