Charlotte - Drivers in east Charlotte should expect a smoother ride on a section of Interstate 485 next year, thanks to a $5.8 million contract awarded to improve about four miles of roadway.
The contract awarded to J.T. Russell and Sons, Inc. of Albemarle includes resurfacing I-485 between Rocky River Road and N.C. 51/Blair Road and improving some of the bridges in the corridor.
Work can start on April 1, 2017 and should be completed by Sept. 30, 2017.
This was one of 12 road and bridge projects recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation. They came in at about $177.9 million, which was nearly $5.6 million under DOT engineers' estimates. The contracts were awarded to the lowest qualified bidders, as required by state law.
