On Wednesday, June 22, the North Carolina Department of Transportation's Ferry Division is participating in an exercise with the Transportation Security Administration's Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response (VIPR) team, Brunswick and New Hanover County sheriff's departments and emergency services, the United States Coast Guard Sector North Carolina, ferry terminals at Southport and Fort Fisher, and all vessels attached. This is an exercise in which federal, state and local agencies work together to supplement existing security resources.
This program has been implemented at various transportation modes and facilities across the nation over the last few years. This is not taking place in response any threat to the terminals, the ferry vessels at these terminals, or any other transportation venue or facility.
