NCDOT Making Safety Improvements on Gilead Road at Bayshore Plaza/Huntersville Square Intersection

Charlotte - NCDOT will soon install safety improvements at a busy Huntersville intersection.

On Wednesday, July 20, NCDOT will install guideposts, known as bollards, at Gilead Road and Bayshore Plaza/Huntersville Square, redirecting all traffic leaving the shopping centers to turn right on Gilead Road. These guideposts will restrict left turns and through movements onto Gilead Road from the shopping center driveways at this location.

NCDOT studied the intersection and found a high volume of angle crashes related to motorists turning left out of the shopping center driveways. Redirecting all traffic to turn right out of the shopping center driveways should reduce crashes by removing potential conflict points.

The intersection improvements are being funded through the NCDOT's SPOT Safety Program.

Installation will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the intersection will remain open at all times during construction. Flagging operations are possible, however, and motorists are encouraged to slow down and pay attention when traveling through the area.

The guidepost installation at this location is temporary and will eventually be replaced with a concrete median. The addition of a concrete median, which will continue to restrict left turns onto Gilead at this location, is part of the Town of Huntersville's U.S. 21 at Gilead Road project. This project, designed to improve safety and efficiency at one of the area's busiest intersections, is scheduled to begin in late 2017 or early 2018.
