Important Safety Improvement to be made near Bellamy Elementary School
Wilmington - Sanders Road, south of Wilmington, will be closed at the intersection with River Road beginning 9 a.m., Monday, Aug. 29. The closure is necessary for work on a roundabout at that location. River Road will remain open throughout the construction period, with Sanders Road scheduled to reopen on Sept. 29.
DOT had hoped to complete the construction work before the beginning of the school year, as the closure of Sanders Road is between its intersection with River Road and Bellamy Elementary School. However, utility issues delayed the start of the project, and work is too far along to suspend the project until next summer.
The new roundabout is expected to not only reduce congestion in that area by allowing a free flow of traffic, but also improve safety by significantly lowering the chances of head-on and T-bone collisions that are often seen at more traditional intersections.
A signed detour will guide motorists from River Road to Cathay Road, Carolina Beach Road and Sanders Road. Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. They need to watch for construction and detour signs, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
